Bachchan is an Indian film actor, filmmaker, television host, and some times he playback singer also.
He first gained popularity in the 1970s for films such as Zanjeer, Dewar, and Sholay. Since then he has acted in more than 200 Indian films. Considered one of the greatest and influential actors in Indian cinema as well as in the history of world cinema. He has won several awards in his career, including four National Film Awards as Best Actor, Dadasaheb Phalke Award Lifetime Achievement Award and several awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies. Apart from acting, Bachchan has worked as a playback singer, filmmaker, and television presenter. He has hosted several seasons of the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, a version of the game show franchise Who Wants to Be a Millionaire ?.

The Government of India awarded him Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 2001, and Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
The Government of France awarded him, Knight of the Legion of Honor, in 2007 for his extraordinary work in the field of cinema. Bachchan also starred in the Hollywood film Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (2013), in which he played the role of Mayor Wolfsim, a non-Indian Jewish character. 

Bachchan was born in Allahabad. His father's father came from a village called Babupatti, in Raniganj tehsil, in Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. Her mother Teji Bachchan was a social worker and was a Punjabi Sikh woman from Lailpur, Punjabi, Faisalabad, Punjab, Pakistan. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was an Awadhi Hindu and a poet. Bachchan was initially named Inquilab, popularly known as Inquilab Zindabad, which was prevalent during the Indian freedom struggle. On the suggestion of one of his associate poets Mr. Sumitranandan Pant Ji, Harivansh Rai Ji changed the name of the boy to Amitabh, which means, "The light will never die". His real surname was Srivastava, but Amitabh's father kept Bachchan, the reason behind this was, he used to write by name Bachchan ("colloquially" childlike), and he published all his compositions with such a name. Bachchan's father died in 2003 and mother in 2007. 

Mrinal Sen's film Bhuvan Shome, he started his film a voice in debut in 1969.
His first acting role was in the film "Saat Hindustani" which was directed by Khwaja Ahmed Abbas and featuring Utpal Dutt, Anwar Ali, Madhu, and Jalal was one of the seven Hindustani. After Anand (1971), he played his first antagonistic role as a disgruntled lover-killer in Parvana (1971). Amitabh played a guest role in the film Guddi, which also starred his future wife Jaya Bhaduri.

Mrinal Sen's film Bhuvan Shome, he started his film a voice in debut in 1969.
